WARN YOUR STUDENTS ABOUT EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IMPERSONATORS!!!
A person claiming to be a representative from the U.S. Department of Education has been calling students and offering to convert student loans to grants for a $249 processing fee. The impersonator will ask for a bank or credit card account number to use for the fee. The caller offers to replace their student loans with an $8,000 grant. ED has urged financial aid administrators to contact students and warn them about this scam. No one should ever provide their bank account or credit card information over the phone unless they initiated the call and trust the company they are calling. If your students receive one of these calls it should be reported to the Office of the Inspector General immediately (1-800-MIS-USED) or oig.hotline@ ed.gov . More information on identity theft prevention is available at www.ed.gov/misused.
