We had a great assembly on Tuesday.  Here is a recap of the opportunities:

The Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps is a hands-on summer educational opportunity open to students interested in protecting Hawaii’s natural heritage.  Students learn about environmental conservation, Hawaii’s native and endangered plants and animals, teamwork, Hawaii’s cultural relationship to the land, and much more.  HYCC participants are mentored by and work alongside Hawaii’s premiere conservation leaders while actively participating in restoration efforts throughout Hawaii.  All learning takes place in the field; hiking and working in breathtaking habitats are a daily occurrence.  HYCC participants can also expect to camp, work in a variety of ecosystems with various conservation agencies, and travel inter-island.  Inter-island travel includes a team trip to Kaho’olawe.  Team leader and member positions are available on the following islands: Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Big Island, and Kauai.  HYCC runs from June 11 through July 20, 2007.  (Team Leader start date is June 4, 2006)

What are the benefits to HYCC participants?

Aside from the educational benefits, travel opportunities, and opportunities for personal growth, HYCC participants receive a stipend and 3 UH college credits (if eligible).  (Member stipend is $1,000 and team leader stipend is $3,000).  YCC participants also receive CPR, First Aid, and tool training.

Is there a cost?

NO.  There is no cost to apply or participate in the YCC.  All program expenses including travel, food, and lodging are paid for by the following generous sponsors: Department of Land and Natural Resources, Kamehameha Schools, Department of Health, University of Hawaii, and AmeriCorps.

Who should apply?

Any student who enjoys the outdoors, is interested in environmental conservation or volunteerism, wants to learn more about Hawaii, enjoys hiking, or enjoys working in a team.  We do not select students based on their academic performance.  Member Applicants: must be at least high school sophomores and no older than current college sophomores.  No previous experience necessary. Team Leader Applicants:  must have completed their sophomore year in college and be at least 21.  TL applicants must have some previous experience in conservation and/or leadership.

How to apply?

All applications must be postmarked by March 2nd, 2007.  A copy of the member application is included in this packet.  Applications can also be downloaded directly from our website (www.hawaiiycc.com) or can be requested by calling (808)247-5753.

College News 11-22-06

The Senior class is involved now in the very serious business of applying to colleges.  The first of the early applications have already been mailed.  The process of application, with its possibility of rejection as well as for acceptance, is stressful for everyone involved.

Some of the stress can be reduced.  By and large, the Seniors have the process well in hand and there should be little or no last minute panic.  Essays are being written, auditions prepared, portfolios assembled.  Students have contacted their recommenders.  Students who are still selecting colleges to which they will apply have taken the standardized testing, determined their priorities, and organized the task at had.  To be so well into the process in mid November means that students have time to present thoughtful applications.

At the national conference of college and admission counselors, several sessions addressed various tension points in the process of communication between applicant and college.  One of them is this:  as deadlines are met, the college admissions office fill up with mail:  applications, recommendations, transcripts, and so forth – all of this needs to be filed before folders are read and often, during the filing period, colleges send letters to applicants noting that some materials are not yet in the files.  Don’t panic!  The material in question is usually in the admissions office itself, somewhere in those sacks of mail and as yet un-filed.  The letters go out as a sort of insurance.  Admissions offices, too, are under pressure to get all the folders complete for timely and considered reading.  This sort of difficulty will in no way jeopardize an applicant’s chance of admission.  This assurance was reiterated at the conference by spokespeople for the college admissions offices.

The appropriate response to a letter or email like this is merely to ask us to call and verify the file.  By the time the student speaks to us and we call the Admissions Office with a request to check the file, it is usually complete.  I keep copies of everything that is mailed from the College Office. Should any document be missing from an admissions file, there is plenty of time to fax a duplicate.  The sooner we are contacted, the sooner we can ease everyone’s concern.

As your student completes and sends the applications, the pressure is reduced.  The anxiety of waiting for the colleges’ responses, however, remains.  Your confidence in the positive outcome of your child’s application work is a great support – as are your congratulations on the completion of a complex task.

Mahalo,

Ms. Ulin

College News 11-2-06

Seniors:  WOW, great job with the November 1 deadline!  Now we focus on the November 15 deadline.

As stated in this newsletter last week, now is the time to double check the financial aid portions of your schools.  Remember, you will send the FAFSA to every school, and you cannot file the FAFSA until after January 1, 2007.  The web site is www.fafsa.ed.gov.  There are for profit web sites, so do not be confused!  The student and the parent will need a PIN number to complete the FAFSA.   You apply for the PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov.  You will need the PIN number before beginning the FAFSA, so apply now for you PIN numbers.

In addition to the FAFSA, certain schools require the CSS Profile which is found at www.collegeboard.com.  You want to file this online and there is a fee associated with the Profile.  The fee for reporting to the first college is $23 and then $18 for each additional report.  Now is the time to file the Profile.

I suggest that you keep a financial aid file at home for each college.  Visit the financial aid portion of the web site to make sure you will be filing all the forms required and note the deadlines!

College News 10-26-06

Seniors:  As the November 1 deadline approaches I want to tell you how proud I am of you!!!  Isn’t it great when the plan comes together!  Keep up the good work!

Now is the time to double check the financial aid portions of your schools.

We will have a financial aid presentation on January 9, 2007 in the cafeteria at 6:00pm, with Paul Levenson from MCC.  He does a wonderful job of walking us through the FAFSA.

Juniors:  Winterim forms are online.  Here are my suggestions if you are planning on participating in the College Visitation Winterim:

  1. If you are interested in the EAST COAST, visit in FEBRUARY when the weather is terrible!
  2. You only have one week so pick one area and visit a range of schools.  See what a small liberal arts campus feels like.  See what a large public university feels like.  See what a private research university feels like.
  3. Go to the school’s web site and click on ADMISSIONS.  Every school offers a tour and an information session and times will be posted on the web site.  You should participate in both of these programs.  Some require a reservation, some do not.  Either way, send an email to let them know you are coming all the way from Hawaii!
  4. You will find the phone number on the web site.  If the school has visited Seabury Hall, you have already met the contact person!  Check on the Seabury Hall web site for the name of the individual or see who the Hawaii representative is which would be posted on the web site!
  5. Remember, this is not the only chance you will have to visit a campus.  Use this time to discover where you feel comfortable and what you like – urban, rural, climate, size…we will explore more of these differences in our college counseling class next quarter.

Maui Kamehameha School is offering a two day SAT prep workshop on November 10 & 11.  Flyer is attached.

The Hawaii Lumina Foundation for Education, USAFunds, Pacific Financial Aid Associates, and Hawaii Association of College Admission Counseling is sponsoring a workshop on Sunday, Feb 11, 1:00pm at MCC that will provide assistance with completing the FAFSA.  Flyer is attached.
