Formulating Your Thesis Statement

Criteria for Your Thesis Statement
  • Clearly states an argument.
  • Addresses both components of the question:
           (1) In what ways? and
           (2) To what extent?
  • Sets up the structure of the essay (in other words, gives a sense of where the essay is going).

A.    What is your thesis statement?



B.    List the sources you used for your preliminary research, in each of the categories below:
            (need not be in Chicago Style here, but be sure to get all the information you'll need for your final Works Cited page)

From EBSCO

From the Annals of America

From American Memory

From an .edu site

From a .gov site



C.    List keywords or phrases you used in your search (in indexes, table of contents, databases, and

How to Submit Your Work

  1. Copy and paste the above information in a word processing program, preferably Microsoft Word.
  2. Answer the questions fully in the word processing program.
  3. Print out your work.
  4. Turn it in to Mrs. Middleton.
OR
  1. Complete this sheet by filling in the forms. (You can do your draft in a word processing document, then copy and paste into the forms)
  2. Print it out. (If you choose this option, your entries will not be saved.)
  3. Hand in printed sheet to Mrs. Middleton.
