MITOCHONDRIA

Amelia's Mitochondria

Mitochondria are the rod-shaped, membrane bound organelles that change the energy a cell receives into a form that in turn the cell is able to use for work. They are found in eukaryotic cells, there are normally hundreds to thousands of mitochondria within the cytoplasm; the total amount found in the cell depends on the metabolic activity of the cell. If it is a cell in muscles, the metabolic activity will be much higher than in fat cells. In living cells, mitochondria have been seen to move around, change their shapes, and divide in two.

Mitochondria are the "power houses" of the cell.
