Endoplasmic Reticulum

The Magnificent Endoplasmic Reticulum

The Endoplasmic Reticulum really means the network within the cytoplasm. It is usually called the ER for short. But, this organelle is not short at all!

The ER is a network that is created by the cisternae which is then broken up into two membranes of the continuous cisternal area of the ER. These two types would be the Rough ER and the Smooth ER.

The Rough ER looks rough due to the ribosomes embedded to its outer most layer. A cool function of the ER is the protein synthesis. The ER is a major quality protein control for other secretory and membrane proteins. Once protein is conjured up by the ER it is then transported by the sack fulls, with protein, to the Golgi Apparatus.Smooth ER Rough ER
