Physical
Education, Health, Athletics: Physical
Education in grades 6-8 is a five period per week requirement.
Health is integrated into science and physical education.
The middle school emphasizes team spirit and cooperation in its athletics
program and operates under a philosophy that everyone who wants to try a sport
should get a chance to join a team and play.
Middle School athletic offerings include volleyball, basketball, cross
country, and track. Practices are
held during the sixth grade P.E. period and from 2:30-3:30 to coincide with the
seventh and eighth grade P.E. slots with an extension into the special help
period.
Fine and Performing Arts Program: Art and music in the middle school follow a scope and sequence that incorporates music theory and music appreciation into the study of voice and instrumental music and incorporates theory and history into the study of design, ceramics, and basic drawing.
Speech: Preparation for the Intermediate Speech Festival in May is offered during the lunch hour and after school during the second semester. Categories from which students can choose include storytelling, humorous and dramatic interpretation, group interpretation, poetry reading, and original oratory.
Dance: An opportunity to study dance in modern, jazz, musical theater, and ballet from beginning through intermediate/advanced levels is offered to students in grades 6-8. There are several performances throughout the year. In the April “Step By Step” performance students are also encouraged to create their own dances in addition to the dances learned through their formal classes.
