Journalism teaches students how to write for publication. Students research articles through interviews or by attending events and then report on the topic. Article ideas are brainstormed in class with students, who then decide which article they wish to write. This elective provides students with an opportunity to look at various issues on campus, in the community, and even globally with an objective eye. Students produce a minimum of four newspaper issues each year.
Students work together to create a lasting publication that captures the memories of the year. In nearly all decisions regarding the theme and layout of the book, students are allowed complete control. Through the process of creating the yearbook, students develop broad skills that are often not taught in traditional classes, such as leadership, independence, creativity, fundraising, and teamwork. Specific skills that will be developed include page layout, photography, copy writing, caption writing, using Photoshop, and digital image manipulation. In addition to working together, students will be given the autonomy to create pages in their own style, that match their own interests. This course offers students the opportunity to feel the pride that comes whenever the yearbook is viewed, whether at the unveiling in the Spring or in the years to come.
